Jean Leray is a major 20th century historical figure in French mathematics. His works are collected in 3 volumes, each of which is dedicated to one aspect of his thought.

The first volume contains an introductory chapter in English written by A. Borel. It deals with the algebraic topology works of J. Leray and relates the founding of the bundles theory and the discovery of spectral series.

The second volume, presented by P. Lax is about fluid dynamics and partial differential equations. J. Leray shows the existence of weak solutions on a large time scale of the Navier-Stokes equations. 60 years later, these profound works still have a substantial impact. It’s in this volume that you can find the first applications of the Leray–Schauder fixed-point theorem to partial differential equations.

The third volume, dedicated to several complex-variable functions, has an introduction written by G. Henkin. In this volume, one finds the most general version of Cauchy’s integral formula as well as major works on the ramified Cauchy problem.

Professor at the Collège de France from 1947 to 1978, he was a member of the Académie des Sciences and of 12 foreign Academies.
